Microsoft Teams: What happens to my Skype for Business IP Phone Investment?

Since the recent Ignite announcement indicating Microsoft Teams will evolve as the primary client for intelligent communications in Office 365, you may be wondering what is going to happen to the financial investment made in certified Skype for Business phones.  “I just purchased 200 IP phones optimized for Skype for Business. Will I have to purchase new IP Phones to move to Microsoft Teams?” 

Good News!  Microsoft plans to support all Skype for Business Online Certified phones with Teams. In addition, all phone system features in Skype for Business Online today will continue to work as they currently do.  In addition, Microsoft will be working with phone partners to deliver a new phone experience specifically around advanced PBX features for Teams. 

After switching to Microsoft Teams, the user interface on the IP Phone and the following Skype for Business Online calling feature user experience will not change. This includes: 

  • Sign-in capabilities remain unchanged 
  • Place/Receive calls on IP phones after switching to Teams (including peer-to-peer) 
  • Presence (including photos) 
  • Corporate and local directory lookup on IP phones 
  • Meeting Join capabilities of IP Phones (Skype for Business Organized Meetings) 

Meeting Join Capabilities of IP phones for users joining a Microsoft Teams scheduled meetings will include the following features: 

  • Receive a notification on the phone about upcoming an upcoming meeting 
  • Calendar access and meeting details 
  • Join using “single click to join” 
  • Add participants to an in-progress meeting 
  • Mute/Unmute a conference 
  • Display meeting info on the phone 
  • Show list participant lists 
  • Active speaker notification 
  • Hold/Resume conference 
  • IP Phones connected to Skype for Business Server (on-preemies) will be able to join Microsoft Teams Scheduled meetings.
